Attack of Fruits & Veggies at Lake Coatepeque

A brave volunteer arranges a balanced meal with the food picture game

My first Glasswing health
teaching in Planes de la Laguna on
Lake Coatepeque!

Last week we scheduled to do some heath training on nutrition and basic first aid with a group of 20 mothers.

Shockingly, we pulled up to the site and there were about 50-75 people.  Although I'd like to think they were all there to hear me teach, many were there for a ministry of employment event that was also happening on site.

Our captive audience

Mike (translator & Glasswing volunteer) arranging food groups
Mississippi Mike (volunteer), & Fransheska (Glasswinger) took turns translating

Making the most of it, we settled in and set up, retaining about 40-50 people.  The training was well received, thanks to our new friend Mike, who translated for me.  He even hammed it up while singing Feliz Cumpleanos for the crowd, demonstrating the correct time for washing your hands.
You must eat Pupusas with your hands!

Pupusas- tortilla stuffed with beans, cheese, &meat. Pure deliciousness!

Demonstrating the nutritional elements of a balanced meal to include a carbohydrate, protein, dairy and fruit we offered the crowd Pupusas (the Salvadorian specialty) for lunch with tangerines for desert.  Many patiently waited for the food, but when the second round didn't look like it would make it around the crowd again, we had a rush for the final Pupusas.

Diana, the local nurse (in scrubs), and the pupusa maker, handing out the last of the delicious lunch.
Andrea providing careful wound care while maintaining her cool

After lunch, Andrea (my favorite dummy), was bandaged during the basic wound care/first aid demonstrations and then went into the crowd to bandage the others.

Overall, the training was very successful and the crowd was eager to learn.  The participants were able to pick out foods for a balanced meal.  Everyone learned the basics of first aid aid, demonstrated bandaging techniques and asked great questions.

Andrea is also a source of cheap slave labor
The nurse also asked us to return for further sessions in patient immobilization/first response for the police and nutrition/ illness prevention with the diabetic group.  Hope to have more frequent posts, there just wasn't enough time in this week.
